You got hurt at work. It’s been weeks, months or maybe even years; that back pain just will not go away.
You feel it every morning. You’re stiff and sore and uncomfortable. You have trouble getting to sleep at night. You can’t keep working in your chosen career; the pain is just too great. No matter how many times you go to the doctor or how many painkillers you use, it just does not get better.
Do you ever feel like you’re alone, like you’re the only one whose pain has taken over their life? If so, you need to consider the following statistics:
- 60 percent of people in the United States have lower back pain at some point in their lives.
- 15 to 20 percent of people say that they have it on a yearly basis.
- When looking at the reasons that people go to the doctor, only four things are cited more often than lower back pain.
Of course, knowing that other people have the same struggles as you does not make you feel better or solve the problem, but it, at least, shows you that you’re not alone. This is something many people try to work through.
So, what can you do?
Get proper exercise
One of the best things you can do for your back is to get exercise. This can strengthen your muscles and support your spine. You can also strengthen your core. On top of that, exercise helps you lose weight, which also reduces the stress you’re putting on your body.
Do make sure that you talk to your doctor first. Every back injury is unique. Find out exactly what type of exercise you can do safely.
Improve your sleep
Sleep really can help your back heal. You need the right mattress for your body. In fact, if you have one that is too hard or too soft — everyone is different — then you could be making your pain worse. If you get that straightened out and make sure you actually get enough sleep every night, it can help significantly.
Do not lift heavy items
Be wary of lifting anything too heavy. If you have to, make sure you squat down and lift with your legs. Most people just bend at the waist to lift. It may feel natural, but it puts the most stress on your back. That could even be how you hurt your back in the first place.
Your rights
Of course, the best thing to do is to get proper medical treatment. It can be expensive. Find out what rights you have to workers’ compensation.
